Strength in Weakness

Message Series GraphicThis message is not only about how God views our suffering, and how much we struggle with God in the midst of our suffering, but it shows you how to best try and comfort someone in great pain.

1. Where Is God When It Hurts? (03/30/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 1:1–11

God does three things when His children hurt. He comforts us so we can comfort others (vs. 3–7), He is teaching us His trustworthiness (vs. 8–10) and He is using us to point others to Himself (v. 11)

2. Christ Be My Counter to Criticism (04/06/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 1:12–24

Believers can confront criticism by being conformed to Christ. Criticism is a gift we would rather return to sender but God wants us to open it and use it to examine our motives (vs. 12–17), message (vs. 18–22) and motives (vs. 23–24).

3. Spare the Rod and Spoil the Church (04/13/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 2:1–11

We will look at two related passages (1 Cor. and 2 Cor. 2). We need to learn to avoid two extremes: Love without limits and limits without love. We will examine the motives and methods of church discipline (Matthew 18:15–20; Galatians 6:1; 2 Thessalonians 3:14–15).

4. Triumph in Trouble (04/27/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 2:12–17

Problems expose our perspective and purpose in life. Paul's problems (vs. 12–13) exposed his perspective (vs. 14–16) and purpose for living (v. 17). We learn from his example that, believers who live to exalt Christ, always triumph in their trouble. Troubles cannot remove our purpose nor smother our message if we live to exalt Christ.

5. Marks of Authentic Christianity (05/04/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 3:1–18

Paul models for us the four marks of an authentic Christian ministry: Reformed lives not religious references (vs. 1–3); confidence in God not self (vs. 4–6a); preach the New Covenant not the Old (6b–11) and behold Christ do not perform for God (vs. 12–18).

6. The Perspective that Prevents Losing Heart (05/11/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 4:1–18

When we constantly behold Christ and live to reflect His glory we do not lost heart. This is the secret to a ministry that becomes an unstoppable force. We can cope with an aging body and a trial filled life. This future grace focus brings glory to God and joy to us.

7. Motivations to Live for Christ (05/18/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor.5:1–15

We are locked in time but looking at eternity. Our blessed future hope (we know what is coming) causes us to be of good courage because we walk by faith not by sight. The fear of God (vs. 11–13) and the love of Christ (vs. 14–15) are two more primary motivations to live for Christ. The fear of God is tied to the Judgment Seat of Christ (we are daily shaping our eternal capacity to glorify God forever) and it is Christ’s love for us (in the cross) not our love for Him that compels us forward.

8. How to Tell if the Love of Christ Controls Us (05/25/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 5:14–21

The evidence that God’s love (His for me in Christ) is controlling me is revealed in the way I view others (v. 16) and my self (v. 20); believes who is controlled by the love of Christ, and views life through the lens of the cross. We see others as having infinite value and potential (vs. 16–17) and we view ourselves as reconciled to God and ambassadors for Christ (vs. 18–20).

9. Don’t Receive the Grace of God in Vain (06/01/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 6:1–18

When we receive the grace of of God in full, as Paul did, it causes us to see ourselves as: partners with God (v. 1); representatives of Christ (v. 3); and servants of God (v. 4). Receiving the grace of God in full (not in vain) demands that we not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. This is the call of grace on us because of our union with Christ (vs. 14–16) and the promise of God (vs. 17–18).

10. The Two Kinds of Sorrow (06/15/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 7:1–16

Sorrow according to the world and sorrow according to the will of God are the difference between life and death. We all experience sorrow or guilt over our sin. Which sorrow we choose is the difference between Judas and Peter, Saul and David and Pilate and the thief on the cross.

11. Learning to Enjoy Giving (06/22/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 8:1–24

Grace is not law is our motivation for giving as followers of Christ. This is not “easier” but harder; the heart is exposed and the grace of God found in Christ is our motivation. We are given an example (vs. 1–5), exhortation (vs. 6–15) and execution (vs. 16–24). God gives us clear guidelines on why we should give and what to expect of those to whom we entrust the money.

12. Giving Back God’s Way (06/29/08)

Steve King, Senior Pastor, Cherrydale Baptist Church
2 Cor. 9:1–15

Paul models how to raise money for God’s work in verses 1–7. Grace giving, not the tithe, is the pattern for followers of Christ. God gives powerful promises to grace motivated givers: they will be blessed (vs. 8–11), they will be a blessing (v. 12), and God will be glorified (vs. 13–15).
