WKSU will host a homecoming celebration for returning WKSU “family” and the entire Northeast Ohio community on Saturday, October 14 to coincide with the Kent State University homecoming. As the culminating event in the station’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration, an entire day’s worth of activities, including the KSU homecoming parade, a station open house, and a gala dinner featuring appearances by public radio celebrities.
KSU Homecoming Parade
The grand finale day of celebration begins as the Kent State homecoming parade marches down Main St. at 10 am This year’s Grand Marshall is Ted Henry, News Anchor at Cleveland’s News Channel 5 and WKSU alumni. Also featured in the parade will be the four WKSU General Managers—Walton Clarke, John Weiser, John Perry, and Allen Bartholet (pictured right)—joined by current WKSU on-air personalities. 0
WKSU Open House
From noon to 4 pm the WKSU broadcast center at the corner of Loop Rd. and Summit St. in Kent will host an open house. Tours of the building will be offered along with the premiere of the WKSU 50th Anniversary video. The WKSU broadcast facility will also act as a meeting place for 50 years worth of returning station alumni and volunteers who have been invited back to Kent for this very special occasion. The WKSU building opened in 1992 and was the first fully dedicated facility for the station, ending nearly two decades of housing administrative offices and broadcast studios in separate buildings.
Reunion Gala
The climax of the WKSU homecoming reunion and 50th Anniversary celebration will be a gala dinner featuring guest appearances by Rudy Maxa, host of “The Savvy Traveler,” and NPR hosts Robert Siegel from “All Things Considered” and “Rewind’s” Bill Radke. Radke is returning by popular demand after his successful emcee duties for the WKSU roast of Walter Mirapaul. The evening begins at 6 pm with a cash bar with dinner at 7 pm The program begins at 8:30 pm Tickets for the dinner are $50 each and tables are available for purchase.
