Saturday, July 5 welcomes The Cleveland Orchestra home to a newly renovated Blossom Music Center with a gala concert featuring the Blossom debut of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. The concert, featuring Orff’s beloved Carmina Burana, launches one of Northeast Ohio’s most revered summer traditions.
Carmina Burana, A Carl Orff Masterpiece!

On Sunday, June 29 at 4 pm, WKSU presents Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana in its entirety.

Carl Orff Carl Orff (1895-1982) spent his full life in Munich, Germany, pursuing careers as a musician, composer and educator. Considered by many at the time to be the world’s top expert in music education for children, Orff was fascinated by utilizing movement to make music more accessible.

To this end, Carmina Burana (Orff’s most successful work) is described as a scenic cantata for soloists, choruses and orchestra that can be staged as a fully realized piece of music-theatre. The work was based on a collection of Latin/German Goliard poems and partly inspired by church music.

The 1974 Columbia recording of Carmina Burana by The Cleveland Orchestra was conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and was honored with the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance, Classical.
Franz Welser-Möst Nestled in rolling hills near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Blossom opened in 1968 as the summer home of one of the world’s premiere orchestras. Pavilion designer Peter van Dijk returned to the project at the conclusion of last season to lead the $17 million rejuvenation project. Blossom, which has grown to see more than 400,000 visitors each year for concerts by everyone from the Orchestra to Ozzie Osbourne, received a major overhaul that included new seating in the Pavilion, new picnic and concessions areas, complete ADA accessibility, new landscaping and new sound system—delivering quality audio to lawn patrons.
