WKSU’s Mark Urycki Honored With Edward R. Murrow Award
April 22, 200x
WKSU Reporter/Producer Mark Urycki has been recognized by the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) with a 2004 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in journalism. Urycki was honored in the Best Use of Sound category for “Maple Syrup.” Urycki’s entry was selected from among the 2,680 regional entries received by RTNDA for this year’s competition. WKSU competed in the large market division in Region 7—which consists of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio—for newsrooms serving the top 50 radio markets in the country. Winners of Regional Murrow Awards are automatically entered into the contest for National Edward R. Murrow Awards. Winners of National Murrow Awards will be announced in June.
“Maple Syrup” introduces listeners to the centuries-old traditions surrounding the process of creating maple syrup from tree sap. Urycki took an educational walk with Geauga Park District Ranger Dan Best, learning more about the ancient history of tapping trees and the modern cottage industry that has been built up around sap harvesting and syrup production. Sound captured in stereo presents the audience with an audio-rich report that enhances the story.
Earlier this month, 33 radio and television news managers from various size markets across the country judged the Murrow Award entries. The RTNDA Board of Directors will judge the national competition of regional winners. RTNDA, the world’s largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism, has been awarding Murrow Awards since 1971.
