WKSU Honored By Press Club Of Cleveland

WKSU was recognized with 10 Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards by the Press Club of Cleveland June 18 at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center. Included among the honors were five, first-place awards in the radio division and one first-place award in the new media division. Every member of the WKSU reporting team won at least one award at this year’s competition. Award entries were judged by Press Club chapters from around the country.
The WKSU winners were:
First Place
–Public Service, The WKSU Newsroom for “Class in America: The Unspoken Divide.” This 13-part series takes a closer look at the issues related to class division in American society. The judges add: Kudos to this station for going after this wide-ranging topic.
First Place
–Documentary, Reporter/Producer Vivian Goodman for “Ebony.” An emotional and compelling story of a young mother’s battle for success and permanence. The judges add: Heartbreaking and heartwarming stories here. Obvious that the reporter took great care to craft this piece—which is eye-opening to listen to.

–Human Interest, Reporter/Producer Mark Urycki for “Paczki Day.” A report that explains the unique Paczki tradition and also tells an engaging story about a small family business. The judges add: Great use of natural sound, good interviews and story.

–Use of Sound, Reporter/Producer Julie Grant for “Bird Watching.” A report that combines information about issues of conservation with the excitement of competing bird watchers. The judges add: Puts the listener right into the story.

–News Writing, Guest Commentator David Giffels for “On Playing the Tuba.” An amusing and heartfelt reflection on the best traditions the holidays have to offer. The judges add: We loved the entry…humorous and very well written—all of that combines to make it a winner.

–Web Page Design, Multimedia Director Chris Duncan for “Class in America: The Unspoken Divide.” The documentary series’ companion Web site comes alive through interactive features, including audio reports, printable transcripts and supplemental Web resources. The judges add: A colorful, useful and easy-to-use design that relays information in a very interesting manner.
Second Place awards include:
Spot News, Reporter/Producer Kevin Niedermier for “Capitol Hill Lockdown.”
General News, Reporter/Producer Vivian Goodman for “Patriotism for Profit.”
Human Interest, Reporter/Producer Vincent Duffy for “Catholic Dance.”
News Oriented Traffic Reporting, Reporter/Producer Michelle Chyatte for “Northcoast Blackout.”
This year’s Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards Competition marks the event’s 26th anniversary as a statewide competition for the best in print and broadcast journalism.
