Joyce Adams
Development Associate

Joyce AdamsWhen conversation at WKSU turns to North Carolina and trips to the beach, Joyce Adams’ face is guaranteed to light with a smile. That is her favorite vacation destination and the place where she travels when she wants to “get away from the daily grind.” But in her position as WKSU’s Development Associate in charge of membership, the North Carolina sunshine always takes a back seat to WKSU’s fund drives and the after-drive work of entering pledges into the station’s database. Once those tasks have been completed, she likes nothing more than leaving Northeast Ohio far behind in favor of the closest warm-weather beach.

Joyce has worked at WKSU for more than fourteen years. During much of her tenure, she worked in the business office; an opening in development gave her an opportunity to see another side of the station’s operation. That “other side”—although certainly demanding quick, accurate data entry skills and an excellent knowledge of every active plan and project handled by the development department—requires that she coordinate volunteers for all development-related functions and that she speak directly with WKSU members who may have questions or comments about membership.

That last element of her job suits Joyce just fine. “I like the excitement of a fund drive, and I like having the chance to spend time with WKSU’s volunteers,” she says. “We couldn’t run this place without the people who spend time at the station answering phones, stuffing envelopes, and helping with many small jobs. I try to let them know that we appreciate them.”

Considering that Joyce usually comes to the station at 5am during every fund drive—making coffee and assembling breakfast—WKSU’s early morning volunteers are well aware of her appreciation.
