Vivian Goodman
Reporter/Producer; local host of Fresh Air and All Things Considered

Vivian Goodman“I was born in Cleveland on December 22, 1947. I grew up mostly in Beachwood, Ohio but spent part of my adolescence in Glasgow, Scotland where I attended what corresponds to junior high school. I graduated from Beachwood High School in 1966. I studied French at L’Alliance Francaise in Paris and German at the Goethe Institute in Munich and graduated with a BA in philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1970. That’s where I first got into radio, covering news for the campus station, including the Chicago Seven conspiracy trial. After college I went to Europe and for a while worked in a dress shop in Amsterdam, and for the U.S. Army in Munich. I had my own cafe in Brussels, Belgium.

I started working in commercial radio in Akron at WHLO. I have worked mostly in radio news since then, (in Cleveland and also in Washington, D.C. for nine years). I also had two stints as a Congressional Press Secretary: for Congressman Louis Stokes in 1974 and for Eric Fingerhut in 1994; and about three and a half years as Director of Communications for North Coast Cable in Cleveland in the early 90’s. My husband and I have two sons, and we play flute in a Klezmer band. I also play at open mic nights with my brother, who sings and plays piano.”

Vivian interviews newsmakers for feature segments on Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Her guests have included Akron Symphony Orchestra Conductor Ya-Hui Wang; Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser-Möst; NPR’s All Things Considered host Noah Adams; NPR commentators Baxter Black, and David Sedaris; noted civil rights attorney Leonard Weinglass, flutist Eugenia Zuckerman, and many others.
