About WKSU
WKSU Staff

Kate Phillips
Membership Assistant

Kate PhillipsWhen the weather is nice (nice being defined as anything above zero/no rain) and the workload in WKSU’s Membership Department is not too overwhelming, Kate Phillips is likely to spend her mid-day break walking around Kent State University’s campus enjoying the beautiful gardens.

But, truth be told, Kate’s job often keeps her inside the station’s main broadcast facility. In a typical day, she processes responses to letters and renewal notices sent from WKSU; prepares and mails fund drive thank you gifts; sends membership cards; and talks with members who have questions on a wide range of WKSU membership and programming topics.

Although Kate is likely to minimize the impact her work has on WKSU, others at the station recognize the valuable contributions that she makes every day to the station’s forward progress. “Let's face it,” says Station Manager Al Bartholet, “Kate and Joyce Adams are the ones who keep WKSU’s Development Department on track.” Trish Gerber, WKSU Director of Development, echoes his comments. “Kate and Joyce make all of our development efforts—underwriting, fund drives, direct mail, membership—possible.”

Thankfully, Kate—who has worked at WKSU as a receptionist; the station’s traffic coordinator; an underwriting assistant; and, now, membership assistant—has patience and perseverance. Although that approach may make her strolls around Kent State’s campus less frequent than she might like, it is an approach that definitely helps to keep WKSU members satisfied. And it is work that satisfies her, too, particularly since she understands the kind of loyalty that public radio can create in its listeners. In her words, “long before working at WKSU, I was a devoted public radio listener and supporter. Some of my most memorable experiences over the years have been due to the exposure to area arts organizations—through WKSU.”
