Description
Building Academic Vocabulary puts into practice research and ideas that help educators to guide students, using tools, games, and activities to deepen their understanding of vocabulary concepts.
Vocabulary terms are extracted from national standards, across 11 subject areas, and organized into four grade-level intervals: K–2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12.
Website allows users (teachers, admins, etc.) to create, assign, or review vocabulary word lists for use in the district, school, or classroom. In addition, lists can be managed, shared, and exchanged by peers and “expert-review” moderators.
Thoughts on Design
The vocabulary material is very user-centric, and as such, a design style that echoes that point was applied throughout the pieces. The design leans toward a simple, vector-based approach with clean margins and presentation. Several illustrations were created to accompany the concepts presented in the manual, along with print templates, and student notebooks, for teachers to use in the classroom.
For practical application, the website provided tools for users to test their newfound knowledge. For consistency, the designs were adapted from the print materials to be the visual basis for the Web application.
Several webpage templates were created for the team’s developers to implement.
